Incidence of muscular dysmorphia in musculation practicers in academies of a capital in the northeast of Brazil
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the incidence and incidence of muscle dysmorphia in bodybuilders in gyms in a capital of northeastern Brazil.
Method: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study with a sample of 306 bodybuilders between 18 and 50 years old. To assess muscle dysmorphism we used the Adonis Complex Questionnaire. Measurements of association between sex, age and use of legal and / or illegal drugs with the Adonis Complex Questionnaire classification were performed using the Chi-square test X2.
Results: analyzing the results of the Adonis Complex Questionnaire, it was found that in males (58.5%) had scores from 0 to 9, which means that the interviewee may have some minor concerns about body image, but they probably do not seriously affect your daily life. Most women (49.6%) had a score of 10-19, equivalent to mild to moderate form of muscle dysmorphia, which may mean the search for a more muscular body. There was a significant correlation between gender and Adonis Complex classification with p = 0.02.
Conclusion: Considering the above, we can highlight that women had a higher rate of muscle dysmorphism than men and that a significant correlation was found between legal and / or illegal drug use and muscle dysmorphism.
