Level of knowledge of physical education professionals about aerobic exercise prescription and chronic diseases
Abstract
Regular practice of aerobic exercise is critical to the health of healthy adults, the elderly, and in the control of chronic non-communicable diseases. But for this, the world-specific guidelines for each situation must be prescribed second.
Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of physical education professionals working in gymnasiums in relation to the criteria that make up the prescription of aerobic exercise for healthy adults, elderly and people diagnosed with chronic non-communicable diseases according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
Methods: 610 Physical Education professionals working in academies in São Paulo were evaluated. The knowledge of the recommendation of the aerobic exercise prescription was evaluated through a questionnaire built for this study. The chi square test was used to analyze data with significance of p <0.05.
Results: when considering all the correctness of the aerobic exercise recommendation (adjusted for the weekly frequency, duration and intensity criteria), the results demonstrated that the knowledge of Physical Education professionals was significantly (p<0.05) higher to recommend aerobic exercise for healthy adults compared to the elderly and people with diagnosis of chronic degenerative diseases and the greater knowledge was associated with age and type of reading performed by the professional.
Conclusion: the knowledge of Physical Education professionals regarding the recommendation for aerobic exercise prescription was significantly higher for healthy adults than for the elderly and people diagnosed with chronic degenerative diseases, and it was necessary to increase the knowledge of these professionals.
