Physical activity and health-related quality of life
A systematic review of current evidence
Abstract
The objective of this review was to update the effects of physical activity (PA) on the quality of life related to health (HRQOL). A systematic search was conducted in Medline and PubMed Central from 1999 to 2009, with the descriptors quality of life and physical activity in titles, abstracts or index fields. Of more than 500 references, 128 citations were selected for further evaluation. Twenty four studies were selected for data extraction and analysis, twelve were cross-sectional studies, three cohort studies, six randomized controlled trials and one study adopted a cross-sectional and retrospective. The results of the studies showed consistently positive associations and relationships between self-report levels of HRQL and PA despite methodological limitations. It also offers some thoughts and considerations more psychometric questionnaires used in this context.
