Prevalence and risk factors of urinary incontinence in weightlifter and powerlifter women.
Abstract
Objective: To assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with urinary incontinence in women during weightlifting sports practice, specifically in the weightlifting and powerlifting modalities. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted using the descriptors “Weight Lifting” [MeSH] and “Urinary Incontinence” [MeSH], as well as the free terms: “Powerlifting,” “Weight Lifting,” “Intra-abdominal pressure,” and “Pelvic Floor Disorders.”
Results: Of the 442 studies initially identified, only 5 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. In all of them, the main variable evaluated was the prevalence of urinary incontinence, and various risk factors were also considered. Conclusion: The prevalence of urinary incontinence among women who practice weightlifting and powerlifting ranges from 36% to 54%, with the main risk factors identified being age, pregnancy, vaginal delivery, body mass index, muscle fatigue, postural changes, and depressive attitudes.
